100 Years Ago and Today: Sockeye in Cle Elum
For generations the Yakama Tribe has fished for salmon in the Columbia
River and its tributaries. Over a hundred years ago the native sockeye
run in the Cle Elum River was wiped out by the construction of
irrigation dams that prevented fish migration. Now thanks to an
innovative program by the Yakama Nation Fisheries sockeye salmon runs
are being returned to the Cle Elum.
